I gravitated to these books when I was looking for something to fill the void between seasons of the Walking Dead. I bought the box set, which doesn't really save you any money over buying the books separately (especially if you get the mass market edition of WWZ which is only $6), but it looks nice on the shelf. Here's a review of each book:
WORLD WAR Z:
First, there's little overlap between the book and the movie, so you can enjoy them both without one spoiling the other. The important thing to know is there isn't a real narrative to this book, as it's not a traditional novel. It's a fictional account of a global zombie pandemic in the present day and age. It's essentially a collection of short stories gathered as the narrator interviews various people about their experiences in the initial zombie outbreak, the subsequent war, and post-apocalyptic living. The stories themselves are highly entertaining and very creative. While the individuals' experiences suck you right in, it's the big picture stuff that drives the book. As governments struggle against the outbreak, they make some horrific "real world" decisions about how to squelch it. Seeing how different countries deal with the outbreak really gets you thinking about how things would go down in a zombie apocalypse. You'll get lost in it.
THE ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE:
This book is a satirical, albeit highly accurate zombie apocalypse survival handbook (kind of like Zombieland). You'll laugh and you'll also think, "hmmm that's actually a really good idea," as you peruse the various survival tactics. One section that's really fun focuses on zombie outbreaks throughout history, and it's clear that this line of thought is what pushed Max Brooks towards writing World War Z.
