I've always been a fan of Mur Lafferty's, and I loved Shambling Guide to New York last year, so I was very excited to read this. It's excellent comic modern urban fantasy, with a strong cast and a well thought out world.

Zoe, the all too human young woman of the first volume turns out to be something... more. The question is whether or not she can survive it.
Her trip to New Orleans with coworkers aboard the ghost train "Slaughtered Kid" begins calmly enough. Everyone gets to their assigned seats (coach for Zoe as she is human, much to her consternation), and off they go. Before long the train is boarded by train robbers. Train robbers who are ghosts. Ghosts in ill fitting cowboy outfits over business wear. Obviously this trip isn't going to go as planned. Chaos seems to follow Zoe like her own black cloud.
Now at least somewhat used to the various beings that she works with, she will need every ounce of brains, strength and determination to make it through this ordeal. Relationships will change, some dramatically, and she comes into knowledge that will cause her to reevaluate her very origins.
This book is much faster paced than the first one and the action starts almost immediately and continues to the very last page. Description is a large part of the book. Different types of beings, what their talents are, what they eat and drink, quirks, personalities and more. The author makes all of it fun and interesting without being pedantic or boring.
As I don't want to inadvertently give anything away, I will leave it at that. I was anxious to read this as soon as it came out and am grateful to the author for delivering a great sequel. Now if only I didn't have to wait for the next one...
