In Inside the Box, veteran journalist and marathoner T.J. Murphy goes all in to expose the gritty, high-intensity sport of CrossFit®.
Murphy faced a future with a permanent limp from one too many marathons. Desperate to reclaim his fitness and strength, the 47-year-old signed up for his first CrossFit workout with nothing to lose. Anaerobically blasted by each workout of the day, Murphy discovered a sweat-soaked fitness revolution that’s transforming bodies and lives.
CrossFit is the sport of fitness, a radical new approach to exercise that is turning the traditional gym workout upside down. Every day at thousands of CrossFit gyms across America, fitness seekers of all shapes and sizes flex their inner athlete by racing to finish fast-paced workouts. Each workout mixes weight lifting and gymnastics into an explosively effective and addictive new way to lose weight and carve out a new physique.
Inside the Box is Murphy’s journey through CrossFit. From staggering newcomer to evangelist, Murphy finds out how it feels, why it’s so popular, whether it can fix his broken body.

I've been a long time fan of Crossfit, but also somewhat of a skeptic. On one hand, I love the idea of Crossfit making fitness fun, functional, and involving aspects of sttrongman and olympic lifts. But on the other hand, I've watched Crossfit begin to almost take claim to inventing fitness. I get annoyed every time I open a magazine and see that burpees, sand bag carries, barbell complexes, etc. are "Crossfit workouts" instead of things that have been around for ages. But Murphy's book showed me how I was only seeing part of the story of Crossfit. Crossfit is community, support, diet. And against some criticism, no more a cult than any other club. The book made me wish I could only afford to join!
Anyhow, great book and I could really relate to Murphy, being a banged-up runner myself and looking for a new challenge.

This book reminded me of a cross between Christopher McDougall's Born to Run and L. Jon Wertheim's Blood in the Cage, two excellent accounts of fitness subcultures. T.J. Murphy's Inside the Box belongs in that discussion, with extra points given for weaving a participatory narrative with in-depth business reporting. Murphy took up CrossFit at 47 after a knee all but gave out from a lifetime of endurance sports pounding. Like most endurance sports types, he brought a healthy skepticism into the box only to discover an efficient, ass-kicking workout, along with a sense of community, a means to pull himself out of post-divorce doldrums and, perhaps most surprisingly, a way to avoid knee replacement surgery. If you've ever wanted to attempt CrossFit but been intimidated by this gritty, sinewy world of Spartan gyms and tattooed Millennials, you'll learn that CrossFit gyms are welcoming places for those willing, like Murphy, to explore their physical limits. Murphy is an accomplished endurance sports journalist and athlete and though he thoroughly covers CrossFit's history and philosophies, weaving some compelling personality profiles into the mix, we were left wondering if CrossFit will put him back on the road and the trails. He hints at the end that he's going to apply CrossFit to running. Should make for an interesting epilogue.
