I know it's usually bad form to review a book one hasn't read, but bear with me a moment. I am looking at the original comics that are reprinted in the volume on this product page and, since there are no other reviews yet, I am hoping the information I can provide will be useful to you. This was a 12-issue maxi-series published in 2003-4 and the first six issues were excellent. They were both written and drawn by Jim Starlin (very ably inked by Al Milgrom) and they should satisfy any Starlin fan. Thanos has apparently undergone an epiphany after destroying the planet Rigel-3 during a failed quest for power and wants to somehow make it up to the survivors (who are now on New Rigel-3). Accompanied by Adam Warlock as an observer, Thanos travels to Rigel where he discovers that Galactus is endangering the universe in an ill-conceived effort to forever cure his insatiable hunger. I won't say any more because it would require "spoilers," but these six issues were vintage Starlin and well worth reading for his fans.
However, the other six-issue story arc had no Starlin involvement whatsoever and suffered in the comparison. Though cleverly written by Keith Giffen and drawn by Ron Lim and Milgrom (and beautifully colored by Christie Scheele and Krista Ward, so beautifully that it is worth mentioning), this sequel to the first story arc has Thanos penetrating a galactic maximum security prison where he encounters The Beyonder trapped in human form. It is a padded story (three issues would have been plenty) that simply lacks the Starlin touch, whatever its intrinsic merits.
So the bottom line is that Starlin fans are likely to love half this book and be somewhat disappointed with the other half, just as were readers of the original maxi-series.
