People may think of chains, whips, blood, and pain in terms of BDSM(Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission, and Sadism & Masochism), where one person controls another in a dehumanizing fashion. I know I did. That was until Fifty Shades of Gray (written by E.K. James) and this subject companion entered the market. The book by Marisa Bennett is perfect for the BDSM beginner or the curious-minded. For anyone who had already embraced the BDSM lifestyle, this book will more than likely not provide any new information. However, if a person who is already a BDSM pro wishes to take on an inexperienced partner, this book would be a seamless read.
The book takes the reader through various scenarios and methods to enliven sexual encounters and explains how couples should introduce and safely use toys--the naughty kind of toys found in sex shops or online sex stores. For example, Marisa talks about using hot wax in a safe and secure manner, so one, the house does not burn down, and two, the recipient of the hot wax does not receive a third degree burn. She also explains proper maintenance of toys and care for the recipient's mind and body. Perhaps the most meaningful inference here is to never use dominance as a means to exert power that physically and emotionally scars your partner.
I recommend, when reading Marisa's book, you dim the lights, shine a reading light over the couch or bed, pour a glass of wine, and turn on an intermezzo music station. The book, while thorough, is a short bedside companion. This will prove to be a delight, because reading it may create mischievous thoughts. The author provides blank pages with questions at the end.
