Here's a kiddie version of Moby Dick that DOES tell the story:
Once upon a time there was a fellow named Ahab who liked to go fishing but could be very silly about it. Ahab didn't know that if a fish is really, really big, you should leave it alone. The fish he wanted to catch was a mean old whale named Moby Dick, and Ahab kept throwing temper tantrums because he couldn't catch Moby Dick from his big fishing boat named the Pequod.
Ahab had a friend on the Pequod named Starbuck. Starbuck was more sensible than Ahab and warned Ahab not to keep chasing after Moby Dick. But Ahab wouldn't listen.
Ishmael was another fellow on the Pequod. Ishmael was the kind of person who watches and tries to understand everything he sees around him. Ishmael knew that it doesn't matter what a person looks like. What's important is what the person is like inside. Therefore, Ishmael became best friends with Queequeg, who was very brave and kind, but who had scary tattoos all over his body.
One day Ahab finally found Moby Dick, but Moby Dick put up a big fight against the men on the Pequod who wanted to catch him. Moby Dick knocked Ishmael into the water, but folks came along later and pulled him out.
When you get older I'll tell you what happened to Ahab, Queequeg, and Starbuck, but--remember--always think about what you're doing and don't do anything where you can get hurt.

Adorable graphics! We are quickly accumulating BabyLit books. A wonderful addition to our collection! I think it's a little "dark" for my personal taste, but then again... it's Moby Dick.
