...anyplace on the planet.

When I worked in a travel-related organization a few years ago, Lonely Planet guides were our internal standard for how we wanted our own content to appear to our clients: painstakingly researched, abundantly detailed and correctly presented.

This guide does exactly that for the Grand Canyon, with additional materials addressing many adjacent areas (including Flagstaff, Sedona, Lake Mead and Las Vegas) that are the principle staging points for visitors to both the South and North Rims of the Grand Canyon.

While those headed off on more challenging Grand Canyon hikes will still need detailed maps for their routes, this guide is an excellently researched compendium of planning information that covers everything from when to travel to lodging options to more than 40 different hiking options that fit within itineraries lasting from half a day to a week or longer.

As a veteran of multiple Grand Canyon trips in different seasons, I don't have a single quibble with any of the advice offered in this book (in fact, it is probably more objective about some aspects of Grand Canyon development and tourism than I would be myself; kudos to the authors for keeping their opinions in reserve).

Whether you are going to the Grand Canyon for the first time or returning to find new vistas, the Lonely Planet Grand Canyon guide can easily serve as your one-stop reference for planning your trip.

As a supplement to the technical planning for your Grand Canyon visit, you might also consider some historical reading on its exploration:
