Caution: I don't know how yet, but I plan on ending this with the word "sudoku" (a friend bet me). Anyway, you don't need to have read THE COMPOUND to suss out the key elements of that narrative. In THE FALLOUT, her sequel to The Compound, writer S.A. Bodeen catches you up with what had happened before. This sequel tracks the Yanakakis family's reintegration into society. After six years of inhabiting an underground bomb shelter and believing that the world above had been devastated by a nuclear holocaust (all this a warped experiment imposed by his insane tech-visionary father), 15-year-old Eli Yanakakis is understandably experiencing some post-traumatic stuff. You can't even blame him for being uber-paranoid, what with the paparazzi always waiting to pounce and the Yanakakis family constantly being the hot button topic on the doomsday survivalists' social media. And, disturbingly, the massive corporate empire Eli and his twin brother, Eddy, inherited is still being run by their father's right hand man, never mind that this guy was complicit in what went down in the compound. Too, Eli nurses this nagging sense that his father is still alive, still biding his time.
For huge chunks of the book S.A. Bodeen lulls you with passages of the Yanakakis family's jut living their everyday lives, and I found myself drawn into it. First, you should know that the Yanakakises are fabulously wealthy and that their harrowing ordeal has accorded them an even more elevated celebutante status. I'm not into much of the reality shows out there, but I can see the lure of it. Bodeen tweaks your neck-turning fascination with the roadside accident and with the freaks in the fish bowl.
